At KYUKAMURA SHONAI-HAGURO, we offer the "Early Morning Worship and Asamikesai Ceremony Tour" program on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. This program has been well-received by many guests, and when I participated for the first time, I was deeply impressed, thinking, "This is amazing…" I’d like to share this experience with you.
[What is Asamikesai?]

Asamikesai is a Shinto ritual where offerings of the morning meal (Mike) are presented to the gods. You can experience this sacred ceremony up close inside the Sanjin go-saiden (Main Shrine Hall) at the summit of Mount Haguro, where the Dewa Sanzan Shrine is located. Typically, this ceremony is only available to those staying at the shrine's lodgings, but if you're staying at KYUKAMURA SHONAI-HAGURO, you can easily participate.
[The Quiet Morning and Majestic Dewa Sanzan]

The Asamikesai ceremony starts at 7:00 AM, so we depart KYUKAMURA SHONAI-HAGURO at 6:40 AM. After about a 10-minute drive, we arrive at the Dewa Sanzan Shrine. As we step out of the vehicle, the only sounds are birds chirping and the crunch of gravel underfoot. The fresh air and the grandeur of the Sanjingo-saiden create a serene atmosphere, and you can't help but feel, "I'm so glad I came."

[Entering the Sanjingo-saiden]

You will enter the Sanjingo-saiden and wait for a few minutes before the ceremony begins at 7:00 AM. During this time, you can quietly admire the architectural beauty of the building, which is decorated in a traditional style. This calm and peaceful moment, free from the noise of the city, is truly a rare experience. Even the waiting time feels like a valuable part of the experience.
[The Ceremony Begins with Drums]

The sound of large drums echoes as the Asamikesai ceremony begins. The Shinto priests will present the offerings on a platform and recite prayers. Among the prayers, the "Sanyama-haiji" (prayer for the three mountains) is especially beautiful, as it is an invocation to the gods of Mount Gassan, Mount Yudono, and Mount Haguro. The prayers also carry the meaning of purification and reverence for the gods, creating a spiritually cleansing experience.

[Receive a Sacred Charm]

After the ceremony, you will receive a charm that has been blessed during the ritual. Many guests of KYUKAMURA SHONAI-HAGURO keep this charm with them for a year and come back for a return visit to express their gratitude. How about joining us for this special experience? The Asamikesai ceremony is difficult to participate in unless you're staying at KYUKAMURA SHONAI-HAGURO, so it would be a shame to miss it!
Please note that the ceremony is held only on specific days each week, so make sure to check the details below.
